ARTISTIC STATEMENT
I write about doubt. But I believe in the ordered universe.
My belief in an ordered universe gives me a clear set of values, by which I judge my life and guides how I act in the world. I believe this is the case for most people.
Yet, sometimes clouds roll in, obscuring the midnight sky and all the identifying markers that we typically guide ourselves with are, in an instant, absent. This lack of certainty is what scares me the most as a member of the human collective.
But I still believe constellations exist in spite of their momentary disappearance. And, like mariners past, I believe the course they once pointed out can still guide us toward home—especially when we are shrouded in darkness.
My plays dramatize this perception: they explore characters whose perceived order to the universe is thrown into sudden, uncomfortable doubt.
An individual’s sense of order defines who they are; I’m interested in investigating what happens to people when this certainty is taken away from them. Do they hold onto their convictions? Or do they strike out against them in an attempt to build their own sense of order?
This struggle is at the core of my artistic work. To explore the doubt that plagues us all concerning our
convictions and the choices we make in the absence of the comfortable.
